Former Lee swimmer continues to hit stride

Craig Chapman always has been a late bloomer.

It took until his senior season at Lee to make it to the state swimming meet, where he won a bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke.

His senior year at TCU, he was named the team's outstanding swimmer and qualified for the 2008 Olympic trials.

And it took him until the age of 23 to reach the highest levels in the country, working alongside some of the world's best swimmers as part of the Austin-based Longhorns Aquatics team.

"It's just great to be a part a world-class group," said Chapman, who wound up eighth in the 200-yard freestyle Saturday. He qualified fifth but did not swim in the final of the 400 individual medley at the Short Course Grand Prix at the Palo Alto Natatorium.

"You can't help but get better, and I'll keep working as long as they'll let me stay."

If his times keep falling, that may be a while.

"He's kind of like our 'Rudy,'" said Brendan Hansen, who rents a room in his house to Chapman and is one of his best friends in Austin. "He's giving 110 percent in everything he does, never misses a workout — or makes it up when he does — and he's always working."

Chapman went into this weekend's meet with the second-fastest time among qualifiers in his best race, the 100 backstroke. The only man above him, world-record holder and triple Olympic gold medalist Aaron Peirsol, also swims for Longhorn Aquatics.

"He was swimming pretty good times a year and a half ago, and he's gotten so much better since then," Peirsol said. "If you're going to swim with this group, you're going to be tested. And Chappy has stepped up. He's definitely moved to a different level."

Chapman met the qualifying time for the 2008 Olympic trials in the 100-meter backstroke last year. He also competed in the event at the 2004 trials.

He was voted the outstanding swimmer at the Conference USA meet both his junior and senior years, and he swept the 100- and 200-meter backstroke at the conference meet three years in a row. Not bad for a guy who didn't take up swimming full-time until high school.

"He really got sort of a late start in swimming, so he's sort of an inspiration to guys like me who have been doing it for 21 years," Hansen said. "I think he's still got some of his best races ahead of him."

Chapman said he has improved since joining Longhorn Aquatics, an elite organization that until recently only admitted former UT swimmers.

He was third in the 100-meter backstroke at the USA Spring Championships and sixth in the 100 yards at the American Short Course Championships this year.

"It's pretty cool to be working out next to the world-record holder in the backstroke (Peirsol)," Chapman said. "He won't let me quit. That sure keeps me motivated."
